BBC Radio Northampton began broadcasting at 0645 on Wednesday June 16, 1982, from studios in the centre of Northampton. The first programme “Start the Day” was presented by Jon Beynon and the first record he played was “Work that Body” by Diana Ross. Jon was a teacher at a Corby Secondary School, having presented a variety of programmes for BBC Radio Northampton.
The first outside broadcast followed on 17 June 1982, and the official opening was performed by the Duke of Gloucester. The station was renamed BBC Northampton in 1990, but then changed to BBC Radio Northampton on 3 April 2000.
