BBC Radio 5 carried sport, children’s and educational programmes from 1990 to 1994 and went on air for the first time on August 27th 1990. It transmitted on Medium Wave using the frequencies vacated by Radio 2, when it became an FM only station – 693 and 909 kHz. It owed its existence to the broadcasting policy of the Conservative government of the time, who insisted that the BBC should end its longstanding practice of simulcasting its services on both AM and FM frequencies.
BBC Radio 5 Live, replaced Radio 5 in March 1994.
We don’t have much in the way of audio from Radio 5 or Radio 5 Live, but here is one of their music beds. If you have any audio you’d like to share with us, please get in touch.
